Looking for Divorce Records Online in Chicago? Information for Your Chicago Divorce Records Search

Divorce3

Something that may be interesting to many Chicagoans is that, just like most other legal cases that are filed in Illinois and in the rest of the United States, divorce records are part of the public record. As part of the public record, divorce records can be retrieved and reviewed, making them accessible through the court. But just exactly how does a person who is interested in looking up divorce records go about finding them in Chicago? One way is through a public records search on the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court website.

Searching the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court for Chicago Divorce Records

The Cook County Government website notes that “The Domestic Relations Division of the Clerk of the Circuit Court holds the records for dissolution (divorce, legal separation and invalidity for both marriages and civil unions, as well as Allocation of Parental Responsibility and Parenting Time or Visitation Non-Parent.” Contents of divorce records through the Clerk of the Cook County Circuit Court may include the plaintiff’s (the spouse that filed for the dissolution of marriage) complaint and the defendant’s (the spouse that must respond to the divorce filing) response, testimony in the case, the judge’s final order in the dissolution of marriage case, and, if there was a divorce settlement, the terms of the settlement. There may be additional information in divorce records, such as details regarding the grounds for divorce, the address, employment information, age and name of the parties to divorce and any children of the marriage, the date and detailed information about the marriage, and other sensitive information.

Attorney Assistance in Searching for Chicago Divorce Records

In order to search for divorce records on the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court’s website, an individual seeking the records must register for the CCC Portal Case Lookup service. The Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court’s website, however, advises that “The Illinois Supreme Court’s Remote Access Policy Allows Illinois licensed attorney and Justice Partners to have the same access to court records remotely, as if they were in the courthouse…To register with the CCC Portal, Illinois attorneys must have an active license to practice in the State of Illinois”. In sum, even though divorce records are part of the public record, in order to access Chicago divorce records online through the court’s system, the person seeking them must be an Illinois lawyer. Thus, while there may be other ways for non-attorneys to access Chicago divorce records, it may be easiest to speak with a Chicago divorce lawyer if you are searching for Chicago divorce records pertaining to your current Chicago divorce.
